Kootenay Salmon Spawning at Begbie Creek

The Image above are Kokanee Salmon (Sockeye Salmon) that were painstakingly making there way up stream at Begbie Creek to the falls. A large gathering had made there way up the creek but at the falls, where they would spawn. The Sockeye Salmon, also called Red Salmon, is a species of Salmon found in the Pacific Ocean. The same species, when it occurs in landlocked bodies of water is called the Kokanee Salmon. Though the Kokanee never knows the sea, the instincts of their ancestors are preserved; they return to the creek of their birth to spawn. They undergo an amazing transformation, where it changes to a bright red, while waiting at the creeks mouth before venturing upstream.
